An observing chair is the accessory experienced observers recommend most and beginners buy last, and the reason has nothing to do with comfort in the ordinary sense. A person standing and craning at an eyepiece is unsteady, and that unsteadiness is transmitted to the eye as a trembling image and to the observation as missed detail — the faint feature that appears only in moments of good seeing is the first casualty.
