A nebula filter works on a principle that has to be understood or the purchase disappoints: an emission nebula radiates at a few specific wavelengths rather than across the spectrum, so a filter that passes only those wavelengths removes far more sky glow than nebula light, and the contrast rises. It adds nothing. Nothing gets brighter — the background gets darker, and the difference is what the eye sees. That is also why these filters do very little for galaxies and star clusters, which shine across the whole spectrum and are dimmed along with the sky. The shelf divides by bandpass. A UHC or broadband nebula filter passes a window wide enough to include several lines and leaves the star field looking reasonably natural; it is the general-purpose choice. An O-III filter passes a narrow window around the doubly-ionised oxygen lines and transforms planetary nebulae and supernova remnants while making everything else very dark. An H-beta filter is narrower still and serves a short list of targets. The figure to compare is not the name but the transmission at the emission lines against the width of the window, both of which good makers publish. Read the thread size — these screw into the bottom of an eyepiece, and the 1.25 inch and 2 inch fittings differ — and read whether the glass is described as flat and parallel, which matters at high magnification.
